RECONSTRUCTING ALEX​

Unsure whether to commit to life or prepare for death, ambitious filmmaker Alex decides to make a documentary from the strange and wavering reality that cancer is in one’s early thirties.

​

My third relapse with lymphoma had one treatment: a donor transplant. I.e. High risk and poor prognosis. Not what my girlfriend Lotte and I wanted to hear in the middle of planning our wedding. So what does a young and ambitious filmmaker do? Well, I asked my friend Nils Petter if he wanted to join me in making a documentary about us.

Three years later, we have footage of cancer treatment, dance classes, a crushing relapse, more cancer treatment, a magical wedding, my slow recovery and reconstruction of our life, before a fifth relapse that likely leads to another donor transplant. I.e. Fuck.
 

Despite the hardship, Lotte and I have managed to have a good time. That’s what Reconstructing Alex is about: no matter how uncertain life becomes, or how many impossible decisions you are faced with, you can get through it with your love and your sense of humour intact.
