RECONSTRUCTING ALEX

 

Reconstructing Alex is a raw, emotionally honest film about love, the fragility of life, and what it means to rebuild after survival. It asks a quiet but urgent question: how do you return to life when everything has changed?​

Reconstructing Alex is an autobiographical documentary capturing five years of life interrupted. Young filmmaker Alex and his partner Lotte are forced to put everything on hold when Alex is hit with cancer. As the relapses roll on, they fight to hold onto their love as career ambitions become dreams of survival. When Alex faces his third relapse with lymphoma, he turns the camera on himself and Lotte, documenting their struggle to survive in real time; not just medically, but emotionally and existentially. And to best reflect this intimate complexity, the film combines observational footage with home videos and expressive hand drawn-animation.
